The ion channels do open randomly. To compensate the change in potentials across the neuron membrane, the ion channels open and close to permit the movement of ions.

The Na+ channels open prior to the K+ channels to because the activation kinetics are quicker for a Na+ ion in comparison to the K+ ion.

The chemical concentration establishes the membrane potential which is -70 mv.
